The Johnson County Park and Recreation District needed to conduct a feasibility study that would outline recommendations for improvements and management practices to improve and protect water quality. It would also address substandard dam safety conditions at Shawnee Mission Lake.

Olsson Associates was selected to develop a plan for improvements that includes the construction of a four-acre wetland complex in the southeast cove. It will feature interpretive elements, such as a canoe trail and boardwalks through the wetlands; pedestrian trails and overlooks with interpretive signage surrounding the wetlands; wildlife viewing blinds; and a potential prairie grass restoration area that blends with the park's surrounding recreational elements.

The project involves the removal of sedimentation from the upstream cove of the lake; the creation of a wetland complex for educational and water quality enhancements; the design and construction of a sedimentation forebay; and the establishment of terrestrial and deep-water habitat.

For better results, Olsson has engaged in extensive coordination efforts with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Johnson County Parks and Recreation District, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, and the Johnson County Stormwater Program. Permitting aspects have included jurisdictional determination of emergent wetlands, ephemeral and intermittent channels, Section 404 and Section 401 applications, and mitigation design.

Olsson's comprehensive study established key requirements and recommendations needed to restore mean depth and protect the lake from sediment and other pollutants delivered through increased urban runoff.
