Three-Mile Trail
Olsson Associates is proud to be part of the team that is helping Leavenworth, Kansas, move a step, or a bike ride, closer toward a livable, walkable downtown.
The Three-Mile Creek Trail, which opened in October 2009, is a $2.24 million bike/pedestrian path that stretches from the Missouri River at Leavenworth Landing Park to Haymarket Square located at 7th Street in Leavenworth. The design intent for this trail was twofold: to provide a key link in Leavenworth's historic downtown area between the Farmer's Market at 7th Street and Landing Park on the east end, and to provide a unique experience for its users by leading them down by the creek channel in a unique environment.
The desire to construct the trail in and along the tributary required a design that provides access to its users, coordinates with existing vehicular bridges crossing the tributary, incorporates the use of elevated sections of trial, and emphasizes a sensitive placement of the trail along the stream bank. The design incorporates a high level of sensitivity to the natural environment and adjacent property while complying with all regulatory agencies that govern the trail and tributary. This project also provided an opportunity to rehabilitate and restore the stream bank to a more stable and natural state while maintaining the stream's tranquility.
Olsson collaborated with the general contractor, MEGA Industries, and the City of Leavenworth on project management/contract administration, trail design, stream rehabilitation, surveying, geotechnical work, materials testing, environmental sciences work, construction observation, and engineering coordination during construction.
