Olsson Denver Employees Achieve LEED Accreditation

Olsson Associates would like to congratulate Bryant Walters, PE, Wyatt Popp, PE, and Ernest Rodriguez, ASLA, for recently achieving LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) professional accreditation. This accreditation distinguishes individuals with detailed knowledge of LEED project certification requirements and processes who successfully demonstrate these proficiencies on a comprehensive exam.
Bryant Walters joined Olsson in 2007, as the team leader for land development services in Colorado. He has 23 years of engineering design and management experience. Walters has experience in all phases of site civil engineering project management and design from development of conceptual plans to street layout and roadway design, site grading, sewage and water line design and preparation of final drainage reports. His past projects include hospitals, schools, industrial parks, roadway design, utility and drainage design, retail establishments and sewer lines.
Wyatt Popp, a project engineer with eight years of engineering design experience, joined Olsson in 2004. Popp is an experienced project manager most recently working with a nationally-recognized restaurant chain and a regional developer in New Mexico. He has experience in several aspects of design including site layout, utilities, storm drainage and traffic.
Ernest Rodriguez, a landscape architect, joined Olsson in 1999. Rodriguez has been actively involved in numerous public and private sector projects interacting with municipalities and agencies throughout Arizona and Colorado. His experience as a landscape designer includes park and recreational design, streetscapes, transportation-related design, commercial, and residential communities landscape design.
The LEED Green Building Rating System is a voluntary, consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. This government program, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, encourages energy efficiency and emphasizes state-of-the-art strategies for sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.
The Acacia Group Joins Olsson Associates

TUCSON—Olsson Associates announced its intent to acquire The Acacia Group, a Tucson-based landscape architecture and urban design firm.
“The decision to join Olsson isn’t one made lightly,” said Walt Rogers, principal of Acacia since 1979 and a founding partner. “Olsson’s values are very similar to what our staff and clients value, and we see this as an opportunity to continue building upon our success.”
John Hucko, an Acacia partner, said, “By joining with Olsson, we’ll have the additional staff and resources we need to take on more complex projects and continue providing high-quality services.”
The Acacia name will continue to be used until July 1, 2008. Acacia staff will continue to work from their current location with an anticipated move date of March 31, 2008 when they will be housed in Olsson’s Tucson office located at 3025 W. Ina Road.
“The addition of Acacia staff will enhance the landscape architecture services we provide clients,” said Jack Lynch, Olsson’s Arizona offices leader. “Acacia is a leader in the industry here in the southwest, and we’re excited to welcome them to our firm and learn from their experience.”

Olsson Associates is pleased to announce the addition of Adam Kramer, PE, and Sarah Zorn to its Minneapolis office.
Kramer joins OA as team leader for the Water/Wastewater team. He has extensive experience in water infrastructure maintenance and construction, distribution, plant operations, and management including for the largest ultrafiltration membrane plant in North America.
Of his 41 years of professional experience, 39 were spent with the City of Minneapolis Water Works Division, beginning as an entry-level engineer and worked his way to director of the division. Adam also has been a valuable member of numerous workshops, panel discussions, and advisory committees to facilitate consensus and address water issues. His work in improving water quality has been featured in presentations, magazines, and newspapers.
Zorn joins OA as an assistant planner for the Urban Design and Planning Team. She recently received her master’s degree from the University of Minnesota in Urban and Regional Planning with a specialization in metropolitan design.

Kaster joins Olsson Associates as a transportation team leader with 22 years of experience. His experience includes project management and coordination, planning, construction observation and quality control for large-scale railroad and roadway projects throughout the Midwest.
Ciaccio joins Olsson Associates as a team leader for landscape architecture and urban planning, bringing with him more than 25 years of experience in the industry. His extensive experience consists of planning and project management of public space and facilities at the national, county and city levels. His past projects have included parks, riverfronts, schools, greenways, trails, streetscapes, National Park projects and places of worship.

Olsson Associates Board of Directors has named Chip Corcoran as Chief Operating Officer and Brad Strittmatter as Executive Vice President. Corcoran and Strittmatter will work closely with CEO Roger Severin. The Board also announced that Patty McManus, Olsson’s president for the past three years, will develop and lead The OA Institute. The OA Institute is a new entity that will provide leadership training and organization development for Olsson Associates and its clients.
Olsson Associates has been ranked on the ENR Top 500 list (a listing of top 500 design firms in the United States published by Engineering News Record) since 1996. During that time, Olsson has moved up from 495 to a current ranking of 169.
Olsson Associates’ Chief Executive Officer Roger Severin said that the company, since 2003, has added nine offices and 391 employees (a 119% increase), and increased annual revenue by 103.3 percent, and all three executives played important roles in Olsson’s success.
“Olsson Associates is now serving more clients, and larger projects, than at any time in our history,” Severin said. “Chip, Brad and Patty all have played key roles in our success and the time is right to expand our executive leadership team and take full advantage of their skills. We are very optimistic about our future and look forward to expanding our consulting services to more clients in additional locations in the years ahead.”
Corcoran joined Olsson Associates in 1999 after eight years with Johnson County, Kansas. He also spent four years with the Kansas Department of Transportation. Corcoran’s most recent role at Olsson Associates was regional manager for the firm’s Kansas and Missouri offices, including Manhattan, Kansas; Springfield, Missouri; and two offices in the Kansas City metro area. Corcoran grew Olsson’s Kansas and Missouri presence to more than 200 employees and more than $14.3 million in revenue. Corcoran will be responsible for the overall operations of the firm’s 17 offices.
Strittmatter is an example of Olsson’s successful student intern program. He joined Olsson Associates in 1996 as a junior in college. After graduating from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1997, he began a full-time career with the Lincoln land development group. Because of the experience he gained as a student intern, he successfully managed the firm’s largest client just two years after his college graduation. His strong project management skills and focus on client service will enable him to successfully manage the firm’s technical practice groups.
As CEO, Severin will continue to focus on overall strategic direction of the firm. Severin started his career with Olsson Associates in 1969 as a student on a surveying crew, later serving as a project manager and design engineer for many of the firm’s projects before moving to leadership roles.
Big T Project Wins OA Excellence Award

Olsson’s Lincoln Transportation Team was awarded the 2007 OA Excellence Award for the Big T component of the Antelope Valley project.
The Big T is one of the largest components in the ongoing Antelope Valley project. The Big T project provides railroad grade separation for vehicles and pedestrians, flood control improvements for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the adjacent neighborhoods, and provides the north connection for the proposed roadway loop around downtown and the UNL campus area.
The Lincoln Transportation Team led the design and project management of the Big T. The client, the Joint Antelope Valley Authority, consists of the City of Lincoln, the University of Nebraska and Lower Platte South Natural Resource District.
The OA Excellence Award is a nationwide contest for the projects of Olsson Associates’ staff. Submissions are judged on the following criteria: meeting client’s needs, innovation, collaboration, social and economic considerations, and complexity.
Segedy Joins Olsson Associates

Olsson Associates has expanded community planning services with the addition of nationally known community planner, Dr. Jim Segedy. Dr. Segedy has joined the firm’s Kansas City office to build a planning practice in this thriving market and enhance firmwide planning services.
“Building better communities is a part of everything we do,” stated Chip Corcoran, regional manager for Olsson Associates. “Jim’s background, expertise and passion for communities will be an asset for all of our clients.”
Segedy joins Olsson Associates as it nears its tenth year in the Kansas City region. Olsson is a 50-year-old engineering and consulting firm that has expanded service in the Kansas City region to include community consulting, landscape architecture and planning. Segedy will be instrumental in replicating in Kansas and Missouri the strong urban planning presence that the firm has in other locations.
Since 1986, Segedy served as director of community-based projects and professor of planning for Ball State University. He has also been a senior partner with The Community Partnership for the past 15 years. Not only did Jim teach his trade to young students, he also practiced it by assisting hundreds of communities across the Midwest with planning projects. In 2006, Jim was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).
Segedy specializes in working with small- to medium-sized communities, particularly focusing on rural areas. He is the co-author of “The Small Town Planning Handbook” and has presented his creative strategies at national planning and revitalization conferences.
Olsson Associates Announces Siouxland Leadership Changes

Olsson Associates announced that Rod Hanson and Jeff Thorn are taking additional leadership responsibilities within the firm. Hanson will serve as the manager for the Siouxland offices and Thorn is relocating to Kansas City to serve as the municipal infrastructure group leader for that market.
Hanson joined Olsson Associates in 2004. He has a strong background in municipal improvement projects. His new responsibilities include overall management of the Sioux City, Iowa, and South Sioux City, Nebraska offices including project management, client service, and business development.
Thorn will begin to transition in mid-September and relocate to Kansas City in November. He joined Olsson Associates Sioux City, Iowa office in 2005.

Smith has joined Olsson Associates as a project landscape architect with eight years of design experience. Smith has won several awards for design and paving projects.

Olsson Associates’ Edina, Minnesota, office continues to grow, adding transportation to its wide range of design and engineering consulting services, as well as a new survey group leader.
The firm’s transportation team now includes Jeffrey Rhoda, PE, and Michael Zmuda, PE. Olsson’s new survey group leader is Todd Hendershott, PLS.
Rhoda has more than 17 years of engineering experience for municipalities, counties and state agencies. Along with experience in traffic operations studies and design, he has been involved in land development projects, focusing on traffic impacts and local infrastructure. He is professionally licensed in Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois.
Zmuda comes to Olsson Associates with 17 years of experience as a project manager and project engineer with expertise in highway, street and road design, civil engineering and roadway construction engineering services. He comes to Edina from Kansas City, where he served as project manager or project engineer on dozens of major roadway design projects and transportation studies.
Todd Hendershott, PLS, has 25 years of surveying experience, including calculating and setting up contracts, proposals, boundaries and construction staking for commercial and private projects.
Olsson Lincoln Staff Participate in Food Drive Challenge 07-30-07

Olsson Associates would like to recognize its employees’ generous donations during the annual Community Builders Food Drive Challenge. The Lincoln office donated 6,810 food items this year, filling the Olsson lobby at 1111 Lincoln Mall with mountains of macaroni and cheese, canned vegetables, peanut butter and jelly. Employees also made monetary donations to the food drive.
Olsson’s 230 Lincoln employees were divided into 10 teams and received points for each non-perishable food item they donated, and the competition was intense. Teams gained extra points when they brought an item on the Food Bank’s high-need list. The winning team was Olsson’s Water Resources/Airports team, which donated 2,935 items.
Nancy Evans, assistant executive director of the Food Bank of Lincoln, said, “We are very pleased with the sizeable donation and appreciate Olsson Associates’ ongoing support of the Food Bank and the Campaign Against Hunger.”

Walker will work out of the firm’s Sioux City office as an assistant engineer. He worked with the Water/Wastewater group at Olsson Associates in Lincoln for two years as a student. He graduated this month with a civil engineering degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Larson, a computer-aided design technician, will work out of Olsson’s South Sioux City office. He graduated this month from Western Iowa Tech, where he studied architectural construction engineering technology.

Olsson Associates has climbed to number 169 in Engineering News-Record (ENR) Magazine’s Top 500 Design Firms listing for 2007. The firm’s ranking is up from number 193 in 2006.
This marks the highest placement Olsson has earned to date, solidifying their standing as one of the largest firms in the state. Since first making the list in 1996, the firm has been included every year and has been one of the fastest movers.

Wilms has joined Olsson Associates as a senior project engineer with 23 years of industrial, mechanical and pharmaceutical engineering experience. His experience includes engineering management, quality control, maintenance and pharmaceutical commissioning/validation. His past projects have included solids and liquids manufacturing, laboratories and facility automation and validation while working in compliance with the Federal Drug Administration and Environmental Protection Agency regulations.
Wilms comes to Olsson Associates from contract work at Pfizer Animal Health where he served as a consultant on commissioning a new biological manufacturing facility. He is a member of the International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Ricks has joined Olsson Associates as a team leader and has 36 years of experience with the Missouri Department of Transportation, and in private business and consulting. Olsson Associates is expanding its Geology/Hydrogeology services with the hiring of Dr. Derek Ryter.
Ryter has joined Olsson Associates as a senior project scientist with 15 years of science and environment project management experience. His past projects include large water structures and the Yucca Mountain Project as a geologist with the Bureau of Reclamation and contract work for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Air Force and numerous private clients. He has an extensive background in environmental remediation, groundwater studies, dam safety, seismic hazards, research on faults and earthquakes, and compliance with Environmental Protection Agency regulations.
Ryter is currently an adjunct professor in Nebraska Wesleyan University’s forensic science department and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln department of geosciences. He is a registered Professional Geologist in Nebraska.

Ward has joined Olsson Associates as a technical manager with 16 years of experience in public works and transportation. Ward has management experience from past projects with the Maricopa Association of Governments and project engineering experience from his time at Maricopa County Department of Transportation, City of Tucson transportation department and as an engineering officer in the British Army. His experience includes regional transportation planning and programming and community consulting.
Ward is a member of the Institute of Transportation Engineers and the American Planning Association.

Olsson Associates Opens Manhattan, Kansas Office 04-12-07

Olsson Associates opened a Flint Hills region office in Manhattan, Kan. on April 2. The office will be Olsson’s second Kansas location.
“Communities in the Flint Hills region are growing and have upcoming infrastructure needs,” stated Chip Corcoran, regional manager for Olsson offices in Kansas and Missouri. “An office in Manhattan will enable us to do an even better job of serving our Flint Hills region clients.”
The office will be led by Brad Sonner and Sam Malinowsky. Sonner has 13 years of experience in land planning and landscape design services for residential, commercial and municipal projects. He is also LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified. For the past eight years he has worked for Olsson Associates in the Kansas City metro area.
Malinowsky will start with Olsson Associates on April 9. He has worked with clients in the Flint Hills region for the past 21 years and has a strong project management background. Malinowsky has a wide variety of expertise in commercial, residential, public transportation and public utility projects.

Robert Smith Joins Kansas City Environmental Team 04-10-07

Olsson Associates has expanded its Kansas City environmental services with the hiring of Robert Smith.
Smith has joined Olsson Associates as a senior scientist with 28 years of experience with the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, Regulatory Branch, and one year of consulting experience. Smith has expertise in wetland identification and mitigation, cultural resources/historic property issues, endangered species issues, environmental impact statements, managing controversial projects, and coordination and consultation to address Native American issues.
Smith has broad experience working with environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act, the National Historic Preservation Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, and state and local environmental regulations.
Olsson Associates Expands Water Resource Services in Phoenix 03-28-07

Olsson Associates is expanding its water resource services with the addition of Gajendra Shrestha, EIT, in the Phoenix office.
Shrestha has worked on water projects in Texas, Arizona, Louisiana, Tennessee and Nepal, with such notable clients as Nepal’s Ministry of Development and the Texas Department of Transportation. His projects include dams, bridges, structural design for commercial and residential buildings, and roadways.
Shrestha is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Arizona Floodplain Management Association.
Hennen Adds Experience to Community Consulting Team 03-22-07

Darren Hennen, former city manager of Excelsior Springs, Mo., joined Olsson Associates’ community consulting team after eight years serving the Clay County community of 11,000. “I’ve been impressed with the work Olsson Associates has been doing to improve communities,” Hennen said. “Joining the community consulting team was a natural fit for me because of my municipal experience and desire to remain active in building sustainable, vibrant communities.”
The addition of Hennen will allow Olsson to once again broaden the services it provides its municipal clients. Its community consulting services practice began in 2005 when former Liberty, Mo., City Administrator Patty Gentrup joined the firm. Since that time, community consulting team members have worked with cities around the region as an extension of their staffs, assisting those cities in establishing and achieving their strategic goals and objectives.

Chandler Joins Springfield Mechanical/Electrical Team 03-22-07

Olsson Associates continues to grow in Missouri, expanding its mechanical/electrical services with the hiring of Dean Chandler, PE, LEED.
Chandler has joined Olsson Associates as a project engineer with nine years of experience on projects in almost every U.S. state. His experience includes lead electrical design and quality control management. Past projects have included: Wal-Mart Supercenters, Overland Park fire stations, grocery refrigeration electrical systems, warehouse systems, remodeling, lighting, and power systems.
Chandler holds a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) professional accreditation. LEED accreditation was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council to encourage energy efficiency, sustainable site development, water savings, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.
Olsson Associates to Open Office in Sarpy County, Nebraska 02-19-07
Olsson Associates plans to open an office in Sarpy County on March 1. The office will be Olsson’s second Omaha metro location.
“After evaluating different alternatives, we decided that opening another office in Sarpy County makes strategic sense,” stated Brad Strittmatter, Omaha team leader. “Sarpy County and the south metro area are among the fastest growing areas in Nebraska, and Olsson Associates is committed to serving the area.”
Initially, the Sarpy County office will house Omaha’s construction services and testing, geotechnical, and survey teams, as well as Olsson’s full-service testing lab.

Olsson currently employs 60 staff members in the Omaha metro area.
In December 2008, Olsson’s Omaha office will relocate to Aksarben Village, a new development that the firm is helping to design for Noddle Companies.
Hartman Joins Holdrege Environmental Team 02-02-07

Elysha Hartman has joined Olsson Associates’ Holdrege office as part of the firm’s Environmental Sciences team.
Hartman’s experience includes Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessments, Risk-Based Corrective Action investigations, soil and groundwater remediation projects and environmental compliance activities. She has conducted studies in communities throughout central Nebraska, including Grand Island, Norfolk, Hastings and Red Cloud.
Hartman received a bachelor’s degree in Comprehensive Biology in 2001 from the University of Nebraska-Kearney. She is certified water well monitoring technician in the State of Nebraska, and has had training in hazardous materials, Community Development Block Grants, Brownfields and wetland delineation.

Jyotsna Vishwakarma, PE, received her LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) professional accreditation. This accreditation distinguishes individuals with detailed knowledge of LEED project certification requirements and processes who successfully demonstrate these proficiencies on a comprehensive exam.
With more than 16 years experience, Vishwakarma is a member of the Land Development team in Denver. She has worked at Olsson Associates since 2002.

Casey Beal is a member of the Kansas City mechanical/electrical team and has worked at Olsson since October 2006. Beal works in Olsson’s Overland Park location.
Travis Figard is a member of the Lincoln transportation team and has worked at Olsson since 1999.
Tim Golka, a member of the Lincoln transportation team, has worked at Olsson for the past six years.
Christopher Talley is a member of Olsson’s environmental sciences team and has been with the firm for seven years. Talley works in Olsson’s Lincoln office.
Olsson Associates Opens Doors to Relocated South Sioux City Office 01-08-07
Olsson Associates is relocating its South Sioux City office this week to a new downtown building at 1707 Dakota Avenue.
Olsson Associates initially opened a South Sioux City office in July 2001, but has outgrown the space with its current staff of seven. In April 2005, the firm also opened an office in Sioux City, Iowa. With the need for expansion, the firm decided to take part in the redevelopment of Dakota Avenue.
The new 2,500-square-foot Prairie School-style building occupies a former gas station location and includes expanded off-street parking and landscaping. The project received unanimous approval early in 2006 by the Dakota Avenue Design Committee.
In addition to engineering work provided by Olsson Associates, M-Plus of Sioux City designed the building and L & L Builders of Sioux City was responsible for the construction. Olsson Associates’ services in Siouxland include surveying and municipal engineering.
